Maramures, Transylvania, Prahova Valley

Itinerary

Visitors to  Maramures drive through mountain passes and descend into the valleys of life where the mystery of rural traditions unfolds before the visitor as a living museum that is at once within reach yet simultaneously beyond the grasp of the whimsical traveller.

Day 1: Sinaia - Busteni - Brasov

We begin our journey of 600 km towards Maramures, with the first stop, in Sinaia, to visit Peles Castle and Sinaia Monastery.

We lunch at Taverna Sarbului, a place well known for its traditional goodies and after that we enjoy a walk in the Cantacuzino Castle Park with a magnificent view over Bucegi Mountains. 

We leave Busteni and we head to Brasov, often called “The Romanian Salzburg” a beautiful city where we will visit the Counsel Square, Avenue of the Republic, the Black Church and we will finish the day in the Cerbul Carpatin restaurant (Carpathian Stag restaurant) for an unforgettable evening. Overnight in Brasov.

Day 2: Brasov - Rasnov - Bran - Brasov

We leave the hotel to Rasnov where we'll visit the beautiful mountaintop citadel. After this we go straight to visit the famous Bran Castle - Dracula. Here we will take time for shopping. We continue to stay in the Brasov area for the whole day and we'll have lunch in the mountainous area in Moeciu. The ones who will not dine can enjoy a beautiful landscape, walking around.

In the evening we go to Poiana Brasov and after a trip through the mountain resort will end up this day at Sura Dacilor restaurant where we serve an absolutely unique dinner. On the way we stop for photos in several locations in order to enjoy a panoramic view of Brasov city. Overnight in Brasov.

Day 3: Brasov - Sighisoara

We leave Brasov and we go towards our next destination - Sighisoara, one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe. Spend the day on sightseeing attractions such as: Clock Tower, Church on the Hill, Scholars’ Wooden Staircase, Venetian House, Hermann Oberth Square. Recreation time in the second part of the day. Day 4: Sighisoara - Maramures

Welcome to Maramures!

Maramures is considered by many to be the heart and soul of rural Romania. With its picturesque countryside of small villages, rolling hills, pastures, and meadows full of wildflowers. After a warm welcome from our hosts, we receive our room keys, we serve lunch and taste local horinca.

We visit Barsana Monastery where you will feel the emotion and pulsing life of the mountains, flowers, fields and hills of the area. The spectacular views of the surrounding countryside and this stunning wooden architecture makes the monastery one of the most special places in Maramures. Overnight in Ogna Sugatag.

We finish this day with an evening party, we dance and have fun accompanied by local musicians and singers invited just for us.

Day 5: Maramures

After breakfast we visit Sapanta Merry Cemetery - located just 4 kilometres south of the Ukrainian border, world-famous for its original “Merry Cemetery”, a special kind of graveyard, with wooden crosses painted in vivid colors. Here, each cross is different, the carved images naively catch one of the deceased lifetime’s characteristic attitudes, while the epitaphs are short poems, deprived of the usual cliches and full of substance, written in the first person like a confession of the deceased himself.

After lunch, we continue with Sighet Memorial. This isn’t a pretty place nor a joyful place either. But it is perhaps the most explicit example of how people endured communism. To say it is a moving experience understates the elemental truth of what went on in this prison. Ask anyone in Sighet and they can tell you a personal story of the influence this prison had on their family. 

In the afternoon we met the locals, make a foray in their culture and their habits, discover step by step this land where time has stood still.

In the evening, we will enjoy a well-deserved party to celebrate our amazing tour. We will savor a party where local musicians will delight us with music and dances while we are served outstanding delicious food.

Day 6: Maramures - Bucharest (by flight)

We have to leave the hotel to airport very early as we have to get on a flight that departs 09.10 am. We head to Satu Mare Airport and fly back to Bucharest with Tarom.
Once we arrive in Bucharest we are glad to cross the finish line,  but sad to see it END.
