Sighisoara is on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List. Sighisoara is a stunning, and surprisingly tiny, medieval citadel in Transylvania, which will blow you away with picture postcards buildings, both grand and humble.
Welcome to Sighisoara! We take a tour of the Citadel, we visit the town, we climb the famed Scara Scolarilor covered staircase, and get goosebumps at the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, the inspiration for Bram Stoker's terrifying creature, Count Dracula. Around lunchtime, we relax a bit and enjoy a lunch with selected Romanian dishes.
If you talk to everyone who's been here, most likely, you will want to come back, each time to discover new objects of startling beauty. But for now we have dinner and we spend the night at the same hotel.
A fortified church is a church that is built to play a defensive role in times of war. The south-eastern Transylvania region in Romania currently has one of the highest numbers of existing fortified churches from the 13th to 16th centuries. It has more than 150 well preserved fortified churches of a great variety of architectural styles (out of an original 300 fortified churches). They are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage.
This style of construction appear in the southern areas of Transylvania, from the necessity of the german communities, to defend in front the ottomans attacks which was a permanent danger for them. Such churches were specially designed to incorporate military features, such as thick walls, battlements and embrasures.
Enjoy the view from the Saschiz fortress over the village and the church, let yourself be conquered by The Fortified Church in Crit. Take delight of a 100% saxon lunch at the Kraus House from Crit.
Next stop is Mesendorf, we visit The Fortified Church, the guide will explain the history of the place, the walls built around the church.
Optionaly, and if weather allows, we go with two carts at Pârâul Dracului (an impossible route for cars), where we are going to have a picnic snack.
A short visit at The Fortified Church in the village of Bunesti, built at the beginning of the 14th century, but we take a bit longer time to visit Viscri - the Prince Charles's love in Romania.
We continue on our way to Brasov where we will rest after a very full day, with short stops in Rupea and Homorod. We check in at the hotel and enjoy dinner.
Welcome to Brasov!
Surrounded on three sides by mountains, it was a perfect place for a mediaeval settlement. The old city, founded by the Teutonic Knights in 1211, is one of the best preserved cities in all of Europe. It is a big city where tourist who come for just one day are surprised that a week is not enough. By the way, is also the most visited city after Bucharest.
Black Church built in 1383, The Council Square -a place with a very special ambiance, the narrowest street in Europe - The Rope Street, Mount Tampa (980 height) also offers a wonderful view over the old city and these are just a few of the landmarks of the day.
We lunch and after our visit to the Bran Castle - Dracula Castle -the legendary castle that no longer requires any presentation, we are headed to see the neighboring Rasnov Fortress.
The challenge now is not finding a good dinner, it is deciding where to go and we’ll take you to the one of the best restaurants in Brasov. Overnight Brasov.
As we have a long 175 km long route, right after breakfast, we head back to Sibiu with the first stop at Fagaras Fortress, the most important monument of Fagaras, one of the largest fortresses in the country and even Europe.
Next stop is Cincu, we visit here a majestic edifice.
We continue and our next halt is Hosman, a typical Saxon village of the Hartibaci Valley, which hides one of Europe's last authentic medieval landscapes: blooming meadows, old Saxon traditional houses, a well-preserved fortified church and a very special attraction- an old mill with bakery and a smithy.
We dine in Sibiu and spend the night at a 4-star hotel.
Breakfast. We visit The ASTRA Museum of Folkloric Traditional Civilization, which is situated in the Dumbrava Forest, at a distance of 4 kilometers from the city of Sibiu.
