Ramnicu Valcea city is located on the right side of the river in the north-east of Oltenia, at an altitude of 240-260 m. The Olt River crosses the town of Râmnicu Vâlcea as well as the E81 road of European interest and one of the main national railway routes.

It was a local market town during the Middle Ages. Historical buildings in the city include the house of Anton Pann, folklorist and writer, and the local museum, with art and history sections. Since World War II Râmnicu Vâlcea has grown rapidly with new industries, including factories producing chemicals, processing timber, and making oil-drilling machinery.

Râmnicu Vâlcea has gained some notoriety in cybercrime recently but is also known due to performance sport, handball. Handball Club “Ramnicu Valcea”, a club founded in 1973, won the national title 15 times since 1989 until now, the Romanian Cup 13 times since 1984, and the Romanian Supercup in 2007. Internationally IHF won two Cups (1984, 1989), Cup Winners Cup (2007) European Supercup (1984) and Champions Trophy (2007).
