Vatra Dornei

The sweetest pearl of Bucovina

Vatra Dornei  is a well known spa and ski resort in the Carpathian Mountains, located at the confluence of the Dorna river, Neagra Sarului and Bistrita river. The town is well known for its natural mineral water resources. It consists of 3 neighborhoods: Argestru, Roşu and Todireni.

Until the 1950s it had a mixed population of Romanians, Ukrainians, Jews and Germans. The large synagogue and a picturesque Jewish cemetery bear witness to the Jewish presence in the area.

The skiing facilities in particular have developed in recent years, and though the slopes themselves are not challenging, Vatra Dornei is an increasingly popular winter destination for Romanians and Ukrainians, and is rich in hotels and pensions.
